How much does a handheld laser welder cost? Prices by power

Updated · By the Maxwave engineering team

Short answer

Listed prices seen in October 2026 put most 1000–3000 W handheld fiber laser welders at about US$1,500–8,700 on Chinese factory listings, before freight, duty and VAT. Retail brands sold 800–1500 W units in the US for US$4,699–7,999, and established welding brands listed 2 kW packages at US$32,070–47,048. Judge any price by what it includes and by the labour hours it saves.

Key takeaways

  • Thirty listings for handheld laser welders from China-based suppliers on Made-in-China.com showed headline prices of about US$1,500–8,700 per set in October 2026, before freight, duty and VAT.
  • US retailers listed the xTool MetalFab at US$4,699 (800 W) and US$7,999 (1200 W), and OMTech's 1500 W weld-clean-cut unit at US$5,499.99 on sale, in October 2026.
  • Lincoln's 2 kW Flex Lase Ready-Pak listed at US$32,070 and Miller's OptX 2 kW package at US$47,048 (sale) at US dealers. IPG sells LightWELD systems by quote only.
  • IPG lists its LightWELD wire feeder at US$2,200, laser safety glasses at US$200 a pair and protective windows at US$65 per 5-pack. Add such items if a quote leaves them out.
  • Payback in months = installed cost ÷ (labour hours saved per month × loaded labour rate − extra running cost per month). Hours saved decide the result more than the machine price.

How to read the table:

  • Factory listings show headline prices. One range often covers several power levels, and the low end is often the base configuration. The wire feeder, crate, spares and shipping may be extra.
  • Retail prices include import, local stock and support. xTool, for example, lists a 12-month warranty and a 14-day return policy.
  • Brand-name packages include more in the box. Lincoln’s Ready-Pak includes a wire feeder, a cart, two pairs of laser safety glasses, a laser-safe helmet, 10 protective windows and 10 contact tips.
  • IPG publishes no system price. Its online shop asks for a quote, but it lists accessory prices, which we use below.

How much does a 1000, 1500, 2000 or 3000 W welder cost?

Price rises with power, but by less than the power ratio, and the seller type changes the price far more than the watts. Doubling from 1500 W to 3000 W moved Chinese factory headline prices from about US$1,700–4,800 to about US$2,000–8,700.

  • 1000–1200 W. Factory listings that include 1000 W started near US$1,800. In US retail, the air-cooled xTool MetalFab 1200 W listed at US$7,999 with a wire feeder.
  • 1500 W. About US$1,700–4,800 on factory listings, US$5,499.99 for OMTech’s water-cooled 3-in-1 in the US, and NZ$16,995 plus GST for the Strata SLR3000 in New Zealand. The Strata model number does not match its power: the retailer lists 1500 W of laser output.
  • 2000 W. Factory listings covering 2000 W started near US$1,800. Brand-name 2 kW packages listed at US$32,070 (Lincoln) and US$47,048 (Miller).
  • 3000 W. About US$2,000–8,700 on factory listings. IPG’s LightWELD range stops at 2 kW, and the Lincoln and Miller packages we found are 2 kW.

Check your electrical supply as well. Strata lists a maximum input of 3.8 kW for its 1500 W unit. To match power to your thickness and metal, use our handheld laser welder power guide before you compare prices.

Why do brand-name welders cost several times more?

At 2 kW, a brand-name package listed at US$32,070–47,048 in October 2026, while Chinese factory listings covering 2000 W started near US$1,800. The gap pays for the way the machine is sold and supported:

  • Local dealer and warranty. Lincoln and Miller sell through welding distributors such as the two listed above, and IPG sells by quote. Lincoln gives a 2-year warranty on the Flex Lase power source and 5 years on the wire feeder.
  • Complete kit. The Lincoln and Miller packages include the wire feeder, helmet and glasses. IPG ships a helmet with IR shield and OD 6+ laser safety glasses with each LightWELD.
  • Documented process. IPG lists 100 welding and cleaning presets. Lincoln publishes a process guide with settings by metal and thickness.
  • Laser source. IPG builds its own fiber lasers. Factory-direct machines from China use a range of sources, so ask for the exact source model.

Factory-direct units offer a lower price, a wider choice of power and configuration, and build options such as voltage and plug type. Warranty terms vary. xTool lists 12 months, and Maxwave gives a 2-year whole-machine warranty. Support is often remote, so ask how fast spare parts reach your country. A shop that needs same-week on-site service may value a local dealer. A shop with its own maintenance skills and a spare-parts kit may prefer the lower price. Our import checklist covers source models, warranty exclusions and payment terms.

Does air or water cooling change the price?

The listings we checked show no consistent price step between air- and water-cooled units, so compare what each design costs you to run.

  • Air-cooled units have no chiller and no water to change. Lincoln’s 2 kW Flex Lase and both xTool MetalFab models are air-cooled. Check the rated ambient temperature and duty cycle.
  • Water-cooled units add a chiller. OMTech lists a 2,000 W water cooler with a 10 L tank for its 1500 W unit and rates the machine for 5–45 °C. Budget for floor space, coolant and freeze protection.
  • Refrigerant direct cooling is a third design. Strata uses it in the SLR3000.

How much more does a 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 welder cost?

Often little or nothing. The xTool and OMTech units include welding, cutting and cleaning in the listed price, and Chinese factory listings for 4-in-1 units sat in the same price range as weld-only units of the same power.

In IPG’s range, cleaning depends on the model. Its 15 mm cleaning scan field and cleaning presets come only with the XR and XC models.

Know what the extra modes do. OMTech cleans weld joints up to 6 mm wide, and xTool states that the MetalFab cuts metal up to 5 mm. These modes suit seam preparation, post-weld cleaning and light trimming. For rust or paint over large areas, compare a dedicated laser cleaner; see the laser cleaning machine price guide and our 3-in-1 welder, cleaner and cutter guide.

What do the wire feeder, gas and consumables cost?

If a quote leaves out the wire feeder, budget about US$2,000 for one: IPG lists its LightWELD wire feeder at US$2,200. Add gas, protective windows, nozzles and laser safety gear.

Item IPG list price, Oct 2026 Included in other packages
Wire feeder (LJ-WF002) US$2,200 Lincoln, Miller, OMTech, Strata, xTool 1200 W
Dual wire feed adapter US$280 Ask; needed for double wire feed
Single-stage gas regulator US$475 Miller
Protective windows, 5-pack US$65 Lincoln (10), OMTech (20)
Welding nozzle tip US$49 each OMTech (20 nozzles)
Replacement focus lens US$125 OMTech (2 focusing lenses)
Laser safety glasses US$200 a pair Lincoln (2 pairs), Miller
Laser welding helmet US$799–1,300 Lincoln, Miller
Door interlock switch US$199 Ask

Gas is a running cost. Lincoln’s presets use 32–75 CFH (about 15–35 L/min), with nitrogen for stainless, carbon and galvanized steel and argon for aluminium. xTool lists nitrogen or argon for the MetalFab, so follow your supplier’s settings.

Plan the laser controlled area too: curtains or a booth, warning signs, interlocks and a trained laser safety officer. Get a quote for these early, because they are part of the installed cost. Our handheld laser safety guide lists what you need.

What does a handheld laser welder cost to run per hour?

Electricity for a 1500 W unit costs at most about US$0.57 per hour of welding at US$0.15/kWh. Gas, consumables and filler wire make up the rest:

Running cost per hour = (input kW × electricity price) + (gas m³/h × gas price) + consumables + wire

  • Electricity. At full output, a 1500 W unit with a 3.8 kW maximum input uses at most 3.8 kWh per hour. The US$0.15/kWh tariff above is an example; use your own. Add the chiller if it has its own supply.
  • Gas. 32–75 CFH equals about 0.9–2.1 m³ per hour of welding. Multiply by your supplier’s price per m³.
  • Consumables. Count protective windows and nozzles used per week and price them from the supplier’s list.
  • Wire. Only when you weld with filler. Price it per kg like MIG wire.

The laser beam is on for only part of a shift, because fit-up, tacking and handling take time. Use measured arc-on hours in the formula. TIG and MIG have similar cost categories, so the laser’s saving comes from faster welding and less grinding. Our laser welding vs TIG and MIG guide compares the processes.

How long does a handheld laser welder take to pay back?

A US$15,000 setup that saves 60 labour hours a month at US$35/h pays back in about 8 months. If it saves only 20 hours, payback takes 30 months. Use this formula:

Payback (months) = installed cost ÷ (hours saved per month × loaded labour rate − extra running cost per month)

Here is a worked example. All inputs are examples; replace them with your own measurements.

Input Example value
Installed cost: machine landed, safety area, PPE, electrical work US$15,000
TIG welding hours per month on sheet parts 80 h
Grinding and straightening hours per month 40 h
Welding time saved at 2× TIG speed (IPG states 4×) 40 h
Finishing time saved at 50% less grinding 20 h
Loaded labour rate US$35/h
Extra running cost per month versus TIG US$200

Monthly saving = (40 h + 20 h) × US$35 − US$200 = US$1,900. Payback = US$15,000 ÷ US$1,900 ≈ 8 months.

With the same savings and a US$45,000 installed cost, payback is about 24 months. At 20 hours saved, the net saving is 20 h × US$35 − US$200 = US$500 a month, so the US$15,000 setup takes 30 months. Time a few of your own parts before you trust any speed factor, including the 2× used here.

Why does the price change from country to country?

The same machine costs more as it moves closer to you, because freight, duty, tax and paperwork add up:

Landed cost = ex-works price + export packing and inland transport + freight and insurance + import duty and any extra tariffs + customs broker fees + import VAT or GST + compliance paperwork + local delivery and installation

  • Duty. The rate depends on the customs code and the country. In the UK, code 8515 80 10 (welding machines for treating metals) carried 0% third-country duty and 20% VAT in October 2026. Your customs authority decides the code, so confirm it with a broker.
  • VAT or GST. Most countries charge it at import, and registered businesses can usually reclaim it. Strata’s New Zealand price rises from NZ$16,995 to NZ$19,544.25 with 15% GST.
  • United States. There is no VAT, but goods of Chinese origin may carry extra tariffs on top of normal duty, and these rates have changed often. Laser products also need FDA paperwork before import.
  • European Union. Each member state sets its own VAT rate. The machine needs CE marking and an EU Declaration of Conformity for your model.
  • Freight. A handheld welder ships in one crate. Strata lists 43 kg and 670 × 430 × 310 mm for its 1500 W unit. OMTech’s water-cooled unit measures 950 × 550 × 950 mm plus a separate wire feeder.

Add local stock, support and the seller’s margin, and a local retail price can reach several times a factory headline price for a similar power. The import checklist explains Incoterms, CE and FDA paperwork and customs codes.

How to compare quotes

Ask every supplier to answer the same list:

  1. Laser power, source brand and source model.
  2. Cooling type, rated ambient temperature and duty cycle.
  3. Wire feeder: single or double, wire sizes, drive rolls.
  4. Modes included: weld, clean, cut, and the nozzles for each.
  5. Safety kit: laser-rated helmet, glasses rated for the laser’s wavelength, door interlock.
  6. Spare protective windows, nozzles and lenses in the box.
  7. Supply voltage, phase, frequency, plug and maximum input current.
  8. Warranty on the whole machine and on the laser source, and what it excludes.
  9. Training, presets and remote support hours.
  10. Incoterm, crate size and weight, and the compliance documents for your market.

Then convert each quote to a landed, installed cost and run the payback formula with your own hours.

Maxwave builds handheld fiber laser welders from 300 W to 3000 W and a 1500 W 4-in-1 unit; the laser welding machines page shows only part of the range. Quotes depend on power, cooling and accessories, so ask through contact for the configuration you need, or send parts for sample testing to get a test video and settings.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

How much is a 1500 W handheld laser welder?

Chinese factory listings naming 1500 W showed about US$1,700–4,800 per set in October 2026, before shipping and import costs. A 1500 W weld-clean-cut unit with chiller and wire feeder sold for US$5,499.99 at a US retailer, and a 1500 W unit with wire feeder listed at NZ$16,995 plus GST in New Zealand.

Why do IPG, Miller and Lincoln handheld welders cost so much more?

The price includes a local dealer network, warranty handled in your country, documented presets and a complete safety kit. Compare warranty terms, service response and parts supply over several years as well as the purchase price.

Does the price of a handheld laser welder include the wire feeder?

Not always. The Lincoln, Miller, OMTech, Strata and xTool 1200 W packages include one, while IPG lists its LightWELD wire feeder separately at US$2,200. Ask every supplier to name the feeder, wire sizes and drive rolls in the quote.

Is a 4-in-1 laser welder more expensive than a weld-only machine?

Usually only slightly. Many Chinese factory listings price 4-in-1 units close to weld-only units of the same power, and some retail units include cutting and cleaning at no extra charge. The cleaning mode suits seam preparation; large-area rust or paint removal needs a dedicated laser cleaner.

How much does a handheld laser welder cost to run per hour?

Add electricity, gas, consumables and wire. A 1500 W unit with a 3.8 kW maximum input uses at most 3.8 kWh per hour of welding, and Lincoln's presets use 32–75 CFH of shielding gas, about 0.9–2.1 m³ per hour. Multiply by your local prices.

Is it cheaper to import a laser welder directly from China?

The machine price is usually lower, but you pay freight, duty, VAT or GST, customs fees and compliance paperwork yourself, and you handle support across time zones. Compare the full landed cost with a local quote.
